The summer is well underway here in Japan, and it feels like an understatment to just say it’s hot. The humidity here makes it nearly unbearable. My hometown in Maryland usually gets pretty hot and humid as well, but I was never really bothered by it because everywhere had air conditioning. It’s the exact opposite here in Japan. Very few places have AC, and the ones that do are trying to cut back on energy since the earthquake.
Needless to say I’m sweating like crazy, and my students look like they’re dying. I really don’t understand what Japan has against air conditioners in schools. Maybe they think the heat helps build character or something… However, the classrooms get so hot that the students can’t focus on the lesson, and they lose their appetites when it’s time to eat. Thankfully we only have a few more weeks left until it’s summer vacation!
